Agios Nikolaos was born in the 3rd century AD. in Patara, Lycia, by rich and pious parents. From a young age, he dedicated himself to the ascetic life and due to his special virtue, he was first honored with the office of Priest in Patara and then with the office of Archbishop Myron. He lovingly guided his flock and for this reason, he was arrested by the local authorities and thrown into prison. However, when Constantine the Great ascended the imperial throne, Nicholas returned to the archbishopric throne, taking part in the First Ecumenical Council. Saint Nicholas was gifted with the gift of miracles with which he saved many people, while he was alive and after his death in 330 AD. Agios Nikolaos is considered the patron saint of the Greek Navy and the Coast Guard and his memory is honored on December 6.
